TL;DR
The designated player (DP) is a specialized offensive position in the softball lineup, typically placed in one of the first nine batting spots to hit in place of a defensive specialist known as the Flex. While the DP is primarily a hitter, they have the flexibility to play defense for any teammate, whereas the Flex occupies the tenth spot and.

How does the DP role work?
The DP is a starting player who appears in the batting order, usually in the first nine spots, and is primarily responsible for hitting. This player provides offensive power for the team while often being replaced on the field by a teammate who specializes in fielding.
According to standard regulations, the DP can play defense for any of the other nine players in the lineup. If the DP plays defense for the Flex, the lineup shrinks from ten players to nine. Conversely, if the DP plays defense for a different player, that teammate continues to bat but stops fielding. The DP and the Flex are linked in the lineup, yet they serve very different strategic purposes. See more on proplayerteam.
What is the difference between the DP and the Flex?
The primary difference is that the DP is a hitter who may play defense, while the Flex is a fielder who only bats if she replaces the DP. The DP is listed in the starting nine, whereas the Flex is technically the tenth player on the lineup card.
Strategic management of these roles is a hallmark of elite softball. The DP can be substituted out of the game and re-enter once, provided they return to the same spot in the batting order. The Flex can also leave the game and return under similar re-entry rules. A coach might use the Flex to pitch or play shortstop while using the DP to provide the necessary home run power or high batting average that the defensive specialist might lack. How to decide if you need a DP in your lineup
Coaches must evaluate their roster's balance of hitting and fielding before deciding to use the DP/Flex rule during a game.
- Does the starting pitcher struggle with hitting?
- Is there a power hitter who lacks defensive speed?
